Role: Finance Committee Vice-Chair

Purpose
Term: 3 years
Role Summary:
The role of this position is to assist the Chair of the Finance Committee as needed with the Finance Committee activities. The Vice-Chair is responsible for educating the congregation regarding stewardship in the Church and guiding the members and constituents of the church toward a full understanding of stewardship and to encourage them to be faithful stewards in all aspects of the Christian life.
The Vice-Chair of the Finance Committee should have a passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ and for stewardship. A working knowledge of principles of financial management and accounting (GAAP) and competency in basic computer skills is helpful. Good communication skills with committees, groups and members of all ages of the congregation of GSUMC is essential. Ability to identify pertinent issues which impact the annual budget of the church.
Responsibilities:
1. Member of the Finance Committee and the Administrative Council.
2. The Vice-Chair must be able to interact with the congregation in the following ways:
a. As needed, conduct meetings in absence of Chair and provide input to the committee regarding mission and ministry needs.
b. As needed, present Finance Committee reports/information in the absence of the Chair.
c. As needed, collaborate with the pastor in educating the congregation regarding stewardship.
d. As needed, attend committee meetings to provide input regarding stewardship and determine needs to support their ministries.
e. In and ongoing basis, interacts with members of all ages within the congregation regarding ministries of the church, service, funding and other stewardship roles.
3. The duties and responsibilities of the Finance Committee Vice-Chair include:
a. Plan and promote a comprehensive program for stewardship, including stewardship education, proportionate giving and tithing, funding the church’s ministries, planned giving, economics and money management and a Christian lifestyle of stewardship. Encourages, motivates and inspires others through education of congregation regarding Christian stewardship and by his/her own example Christian stewardship
b. Interprets the biblical and theological basis for stewardship through programs and resources consistent with the doctrines of The United Methodist Church.
c. Develops funding concepts within the local church consistent with sound stewardship principles.
d. Participates in ministries of Gum Spring UMC through prayers, presence, gifts, and service. Communicates with leaders of various Church ministries to determine resources needed to accomplish goals of those ministries and communicate those needs to the Finance Committee for funding.
e. Educates the local church about the concept that tithing (giving 10%) is the minimum goal of giving in the United Methodist Church.
f. Design and schedule interpretive events, distribute promotional material, and participate in a year-round program of stewardship.
g. Provides guidance in the ministry area of stewardship to the Church Finance Committee.
h. Creates within the congregation a deepening commitment to personal and corporate Christian stewardship, which includes the use and sharing of talents and resources.
i. Conduct meetings of the Finance Committee in the absence of the Chair.
