GSUMC – Role Description

Role: Administrative Council Chair and Vice-Chair (Discipline 249.1)
Ministry Area: Resource Ministries – Administrative Council
Purpose
Term: 3 years each position (Vice-Chair is expected to become Chair after three-year term).
Role Summary:
1. Leads the Council in fulfilling its responsibilities.
2. Collaborates with the Council Secretary, Pastor and others to prepare agenda for Council meetings.
3. Reviews and assigns responsibility for implementing actions taken by the Council.
4. Communicates with Council members to facilitate informed action at Council meetings.
5. Coordinates various activities of the Council.
6. Provides initiative and leadership for the Council in planning, establishing goals & objectives, and evaluation of actions and programs.
7. Participates in UMC leadership training programs.
8. Entitled to attend meetings of all boards and committees of the church unless limited by the Book of Discipline.
9. Encouraged to attend Annual Conference of the UMC.
10. The Vice-Chair assists the chair, attending all meetings, and runs meetings when the Chair is not available.
Note: This role may be combined with the role of Lay Leader and/or Lay Member of Annual Conference.
Responsibilities:
1. Presides over Administrative Council meetings.
2. Helps identify the needs of the congregation and community and brings these issues before the Council.
3. Communicates the Council’s activities to the congregation.
4. Helps to define roles of various positions in relationship to their mission.
5. Makes sure all church leaders know the task the Council has asked them to do, and to follow up on those respective tasks.
6. Guides and directs the Council’s work to achieve goals and objectives.
7. Organizes and conducts an annual planning meeting of the Administrative Council.
8. Coordinates and assists in the development of annual Church program plans for approval at Charge Conference.
9. Ascertains the Church Budget is prepared and executed as approved by the Charge Conference.
10. Interacts with members of congregation determine needs, gather input and identify issues requiring Council review and action.
11. Maintains an open and effective working relationship with the pastor.
12. Recruits others to participate and become engaged in work of the church.
13. Keeps Council meetings focused on issues on the table.
14. Generally holds Council meetings once each month.
